Ilex crenata ‘Stokes’ makes an excellent hedging plant – a great alternative to box for creating a formal boundary! This low-growing Holly bears its white flowers in May followed by glossy, black berries. Japanese Holly has shiny, dark green foliage with neatly scalloped edges that provide plenty of year round interest. This hardy shrub is particularly tolerant of cold sites and won’t scorch easily like Box plants. Holly ‘Stokes ‘is a male cultivar which makes a useful choice for woodland areas, cottage garden borders, hedges and rockeries, providing good structure in the garden, even throughout the winter months.
